PROJECT TYPE

Mobile App / Wayfinding

PROBLEM

Guests struggled to navigate the large and complex hotel layout, often relying on staff for directions and experiencing delays in reaching their destinations.

CONTEXT

  • Hospitality, retail, travel and tourism industry

  • Complex physical environment

  • Integration with external mapping software (Ipxion / Jibestream)

APPROACH

I approached this project by translating a complex physical environment into a clear and usable mobile experience. Given the scale of the hotel and the constraints of mobile interfaces, the focus was on simplifying navigation while preserving spatial accuracy.

I worked closely with the external mapping provider (Inpixon / Jibestream) to understand system capabilities and limitations, ensuring the final experience was both technically feasible and intuitive for users.

Constraints included working within a third-party mapping system and adapting a large physical space to a small mobile interface.

KEY CONTRIBUTIONS

  • Led the end-to-end design of the mobile map experience as the sole UX designer

  • Defined navigation flows to enable users to locate rooms and key areas with minimal friction

  • Collaborated with an external vendor (Inpixon / Jibestream)to integrate mapping technology into the app

  • Translated a complex physical layout into a simplified digital interface

IMPACT

The final solution enabled guests to independently navigate the hotel using the mobile app, reducing reliance on staff for directions and improving overall guest experience. The addition of wayfinding also increased the practical value of the app within the hotel ecosystem.

REFLECTION

Designing for spatial navigation highlighted the challenge of balancing real-world complexity with mobile usability. If I were to iterate further, I would explore features such as step-by-step directions or personalized navigation to further enhance the experience.
